The Legend of Room 58: Mrs. Merriam Fields
Welcome to Room 58 at Sequoyah High School, the domain of Mrs. Merriam Fields. Enter with purpose, for this is not merely an English class—it is a nine-month crucible designed to determine the kind of man or woman you are destined to become: determined, hopeful, worthy of a challenge, and resilient.
Mrs. Fields operates under an unwavering code: no tardies, no missed assignments, and no excuses. She pledges to work her tail off for every single student, expecting that you extend the exact same courtesy in return. Her classroom is anchored by three absolute rules—be ready, be respectful, and be responsible.
Across the semester, she will command your journey through thrilling literary inquiries:
American Voices & Survival: You will investigate what it means to be "American"
and confront the raw question of what it takes to survive.
Destiny & Civil Rights: You will dissect star-crossed romances to ask if we determine our own destinies, witness how words inspire change through Civil Rights literature, and dive into a novel study of To Kill a Mockingbird.
Transformations & World’s End: You will explore what can be learned from journeys of transformation
before plunging into the culminating research project, "World’s End," to discover why humanity dares to imagine the future.
Equipped with the essential weapons of grammar, research, critique, and composition, you will forge the communication, reading, and writing skills necessary to conquer college, career, and post-secondary networking opportunities.
Should you ever need counsel during this epic quest, catch Mrs. Fields anytime outside of class—including during 3rd Period Planning—and she will hear you out.
Engage yourself fully, because you are here, and Mrs. Fields is ready to make your time in Room 58 entirely worth your while.
