Class Philosophy:
Young people are amazing to work with! They are all unique individuals that offer a fresh perspective on the world around us. While I firmly believe that all students can learn, I think teaching goes beyond concept attainment. Many of the characteristics that I admired in some of my favorite teachers are emulated in my classroom. In these characteristics, I have found that they still apply and I use them to establish positive relationships with my students. The goals for my classroom environment is a feeling of mutual respect, for self and others, friendliness, and support. I want my students to feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. I want them to be as enthusiastic as I am about learning and science.
Within my lessons, I encourage critical thinking and problem solving. The world is not made up of formulaic labs to be answered correctly. While these have these have their place in showing concepts, I want my students to be able to do more. Students need to be able to form their own ideas based on quantitative data analysis and communicate those ideas effectively with evidence. They need to understand that science is all around them and they need a working knowledge of these ideas and concepts. I strive to empower students so they can become knowledgeable adults.
